The two-minute version. Everything below is the same argument, with the numbers.
I own an e-bike store, so you'd expect me to tell you to buy local. That's not really the honest answer, and honest is the only thing I've got that a website doesn't.
Here's the honest answer: for some people, buying online is fine. If you've already owned two or three e-bikes, you know exactly what frame size and motor you want, you're comfortable with a torque wrench, and you have a mechanic you trust β order it. You'll be OK.
For everybody else, and that's most first-time buyers, the math is different. And it's not the math you think.
The real problem isn't price. It's risk.
You find something online that looks too good to be true. It arrives in a hundred-pound box. And then you discover there's no support, no customer service, no parts, and nowhere to turn when the display stops talking to the motor in month four.
That's the trade nobody mentions at checkout. You didn't save money β you moved the risk onto yourself.
So the question isn't "which is cheaper." It's "who's holding the risk?"
What buying online actually costs you
1. You're guessing at fit
E-bikes range from about 39 lbs to 77 lbs. That spread changes everything about how a bike behaves β how it leans when you slow down, how it feels pulling out of a driveway, whether you can get it into your car.
A spec sheet can't tell you that. Neither can a photo. Buying an e-bike without riding it is like buying hiking boots without trying them on: the specs look great until you're actually moving and something feels off.
2. Assembly is your problem now
Most online e-bikes arrive roughly 80% assembled. You're finishing the last 20% β and the last 20% is the safety-critical part: brakes, handlebar torque, wheel true, electrical connections.
Shops around Portland charge $100β$250 to finish a boxed e-bike properly. Factor that into the price you thought you were paying.
3. A warranty isn't service
Almost every online e-bike has a warranty. Very few have anywhere to take it. A warranty that ships you a part in nine days and expects you to install it isn't service β it's paperwork.
4. There's nobody to talk to
When something goes sideways at month seven, you're emailing an address. That's the difference that never shows up in a price comparison.
What a local dealer should give you
Not every "local" shop is worth the premium. Here's what to actually ask for β and hold any dealer, including us, to this list.
Ask: "Can I ride it today, right now, without an appointment?"
A real dealer says yes. If you need an appointment, a deposit, or a two-week wait to sit on a bike, that's a showroom, not a shop.
At our Tualatin store there are 60+ Mokwheels on the floor and every one of them is rideable. Walk in, sign a waiver, put on a helmet, take up to 30 minutes. Fat tire, mountain, commuter, and our new lightweight models. No appointment, no deposit, no pressure.
You'll know in the first block. There's a moment about ten seconds into a first ride where people stop thinking about the price and just grin. That's the whole thing, and it's the one thing a website can never hand you.
Ask: "What does assembly cost?"
The answer should be nothing.
Our ProBuild is a 25-point checklist: every bolt torqued, brakes and spokes aligned, all electrical checked, supervisor sign-off. It's a $99 service and it's included free on every bike, permanently β not as a promo. So is the fender ($99.99) and the rear rack ($79.99).
That's roughly $280 of build and gear included at no charge β and we sell at the same price you'd pay on the manufacturer's website. We're upfront about that on purpose. You pay what you'd pay online and you get more.
No assembly fee. No hidden fees. The price you see is the price you pay.
Ask: "What happens if I don't like it?"
Ours is 14 days. Take it home, ride your own neighborhood, your own hills, load up the kids. If it's not the right bike, bring it back β swap models or return it, no questions asked.
Try getting that from a warehouse.
Ask: "What happens in year two?"
This is the question almost nobody asks and everybody eventually needs.
We're minutes away, not three time zones. Tune-ups, flat fixes, parts and labor β and with a protection plan, that's covered too, along with local delivery and anytime walk-in service. Step up a tier and you get two tune-ups a year, same-day priority service, and Ride Rescue: if you're stranded, we come get you.
You're not buying a bike. You're joining a shop.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to buy an e-bike online?
Usually not, once you account for assembly. We sell at the same price as the manufacturer's website and include the $99 ProBuild, a fender, and a rear rack free β about $280 of value. A boxed online bike typically costs another $100β$250 to have finished properly by a shop.
Do I need an appointment to test ride an e-bike?
No. Walk into our Tualatin or Eugene store during open hours. No appointment, no deposit. Sign a waiver, we'll fit a helmet and give you an orientation, and you can ride up to 30 minutes on anything in stock.
How long is the return window?
14 days. Ride it at home on your own roads and hills. If it's not right, swap models or return it β no questions asked.
Do you service bikes bought elsewhere?
Our service is Mokwheel-only. Every Mokwheel we sell is ProBuilt in-house before you take it home.
Where are you located?
18041 SW Lower Boones Ferry Rd #3, Tualatin, OR 97224 β about 15 minutes from downtown Portland, just off I-5. We also have a store in Eugene.

You know me from my older videos as the guy who warns you about the risks of buying an e-bike online. Today I want to talk about something else β that moment about ten seconds into your first ride where you stop thinking about the price and you just grin. That moment is the whole reason we built this store, and it's the one thing a website can never hand you.
So before you buy a bike on the internet, here are the three things that make walking into the Mokwheel Factory Store a completely different experience.
Difference number one: you try it before you buy it. You don't guess from a photo and hope. You walk in, we roll you out on a bike, and you take up to 30 minutes. No pressure. Put on a helmet, we'll give you an orientation, and you're off to the races. You can try our fat tire e-bikes, our mountain bikes, some of our commuters, and even our brand new lightweight models. You'll know in the first block if it's the one, and nobody online can give you that.
Difference number two: our Ride Ready, Risk-Free offer. When you're ready, you don't just get a hundred-pound box of parts. You get a bike my techs have already built, tuned, and safety-checked by hand before you even throw a leg over it. That's our $99 ProBuild, and it's free. We're even throwing in the fender and rear rack. No assembly fee, no hidden fees. The price you see is the price you pay. And you get 14 days to love the ride β take it home, ride it, load up the kids, and if it's not the right one, bring it back. Try getting that from a warehouse.
Difference number three: you're not just buying a bike, you're joining a shop. This is the part the internet can't ship. We're minutes away, not three time zones. Add a protection plan and your tune-ups, flats, parts and labor are covered β plus local delivery and anytime walk-in service. Step up a tier and you get two tune-ups a year, same-day priority service, and Ride Rescue, so if you're ever stranded we'll come and grab you. Add a spare battery with your bike and take a hundred dollars off, so your range never ends the fun. And if something ever goes sideways, you get to talk to me.
So that's the difference. Online sells you a bike and wishes you good luck. We hand you an experience and a shop that has your back for years to come. So come see us at the Mokwheel Factory Store here in Tualatin. Throw a leg over one, take that first ride, and you'll feel it for yourself. I'm the Mokwheel Guy. Come find your ride.
