Most people walk into an e-bike shop the same way they'd walk into a car dealership — shoulders tense, wallet clenched, waiting to get sold to. Here's what actually happens, from someone who's been on both sides of the counter.

I'm Johnny, owner of Mokwheel Factory Store in Portland. I've been doing this for six years, and I've watched hundreds of first-time buyers walk through the door with the same expression — equal parts curious and overwhelmed.

If that's you, this guide is going to save you a lot of time. Here's exactly what to expect, what questions to ask, and the red flags that tell you a shop isn't worth your time.

1. It's Going to Feel Like a Lot. That's Normal.

When you first walk into any e-bike shop, there are bikes everywhere. Different price points, different styles, different motor systems, different battery sizes. It's overwhelming — and that's not a flaw in the shop. That's the industry right now.

Here's what I'd do: don't try to figure it out alone. You'll burn an hour reading spec stickers and learn nothing useful. Find a staff member within the first two minutes and let them be your guide. That's literally what we're there for.

2. A Good Shop Asks Questions Before They Show You Bikes

This is the biggest tell of whether a shop is worth your time.

Before anyone points at a bike, they should be asking you:

  • Have you ridden an e-bike before?
  • What are you actually going to use it for — commuting, weekend rides, hauling kids, adventure?
  • Who else is going to ride it?
  • Where do you live, and where are you riding?

If a salesperson skips all that and walks you straight to the most expensive bike on the floor — that's your first red flag. Not always a dealbreaker, but pay attention. A good shop is mentally eliminating bikes for you based on your answers, not adding to your cart.

3. Know What to Ask Them

You don't need to be an e-bike expert. You just need four questions:

  1. What's the real-world range? Not the marketing number. The actual range with a rider, hills, and pedal assist on level 3.
  2. How does the warranty actually work? Who covers what, and for how long?
  3. What happens if something breaks in six months? Do they service it in-house, or do they ship it out?
  4. What if I need service while traveling? Is there a dealer network, or am I on my own?

If they fumble these questions, that tells you everything about what ownership is going to feel like.

4. The Test Ride Is the Whole Game

If a shop won't let you test ride, leave. Full stop. They're not treating you like a real customer.

When you're on the bike, here's what to actually pay attention to:

  • How smooth is the pedal assist? Is it jerky when it kicks in, or does it ramp up naturally?
  • How does the throttle feel? Try every assist level, not just one.
  • How heavy is it? Lift it. Pretend you're putting it on a car rack or carrying it up a step.
  • Does it feel right? Trust your gut. If it feels weird in the parking lot, it'll feel weird on your commute.

And here's the thing nobody tells you: you're not just test riding the bike. You're test riding the shop. If the bike isn't dialed in — brakes mushy, shifting off, tire pressure wrong — that's the shop telling you what their service department looks like.

5. Green Flags That Tell You the Shop Is Legit

Quick checklist:

  • The staff rides the bikes themselves. Ask them. If they ride, they'll tell you the real strengths and the real weaknesses, not just the spec sheet.
  • They tell you what other customers are saying — not just what the brochure says.
  • They talk about long-term support, not just the sale.
  • They tell you to go check out other shops.

I know that last one sounds crazy coming from me. But I tell my customers to do it all the time. An e-bike is an investment. I'd rather you walk into other showrooms, sleep on it, and come back confident — than rush a decision and regret it.

Walking into an e-bike shop shouldn't feel intimidating. Take your time. Come back twice. Sleep on it. Don't let anyone rush you.
